Business Origins

The C.I.A. Debt Recovery Group Ltd was originally formed in 1993 as purely insurance investigators and debt collectors for the insurance industry due to the principal's previous background in the N Z Police, and working as field agent for Baycorp NZ . Baycorp is not a specialist tenancy debt collector as is our company.

The company used to be known as Chase Investigative Agencies Ltd and hence the reason why the initials of C.I.A. were retained for branding and the current naming of the company when the company was renamed as The C.I.A Debt  Recovery Group Ltd in April 2008. We decided not to renew our private investigator licence that year to concentrate solely on debt collection. You don't need a private investigator's licence to carry out tracing and debt collection. You cannot retain the word or derivatives of the word "investigation" in the naming of a company without a private investigator's licence and hence the reason for the company name change.

An opportunity arose in 1997 to demonstrate, to the national president of the property manager's division of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand, the tracing and debt collecting abilities of our business.

A six month trial took place before we were invited to market our services to the rest of the membership. Our business has snowballed ever since so that we now give national coverage.

We have among our client base many branches of the well-known franchises of Barfoot & Thompson Ltd, First National, L J Hookers, Harcourts, Bayleys Property Management, Quinovic, Rex Davies Ltd, Harveys Group, Olsen Everson, Ray White, and The Professionals.

When you have location rates of 89.7% and recovery rates from them of 86% of tenancy you can see why we are regularly being referred to private landlords as well, by property managers, the Courts and other specialist tenancy specific government departments.
